Dhanteras Puja Vidhi:
Dhanteras preparations begin days in advance of the actual day. People start cleaning and putting rangoli, flowers, lights, and diyas on their houses and offices. Traditional and bright rangoli patterns adorn the entrance. The footprint of the goddess Lakshmi can also be seen at the front door.
On this day, delicious sweets and savory dishes are prepared for Goddess Lakshmi. Making “Naivedyam” using jaggery and powdered dry coriander seeds is a distinctive tradition in the state of Maharashtra.
Early morning bathing and rising celebrate Dhanteras day. They prepare for the evening Lakshmi puja after finishing the morning rituals. The entire family comes together to worship the goddess Lakshmi in the evening using ghee diyas, flowers, kumkum, and Chawal. For twice as many blessings and benefits, people worship Lord Kuber on this day as well.
Some devotees observe a fast on Dhanteras that lasts from early in the morning till after the Lakshmi puja is finished. The Prasad is consumed by the entire family at once and is also shared with friends and families. In homage to Goddess Lakshmi, people sing bhajans and devotional songs all day long.
On Dhanteras, it is also traditional to ignite Yamadeep. A Diya is lit outside the house during this ritual to honor Yama, the Lord of Death. This Diya is meant to be lit to ward off any evil and to prevent any family members from dying too soon.
Significance of Dhanteras
Hindu mythology holds that the festival of “Dhantrayodashi” is auspicious because it is believed that on this day, the goddess Lakshmi and the god of wealth, Lord Kuber, emerged from the ocean when the milky sea was being churned up. People then started praying to Lord Kuber and Goddess Lakshmi to receive divine blessings for a prosperous life.
To welcome Goddess Lakshmi into one’s home, buying precious metals like gold or silver on Dhanteras is also viewed as auspicious. A new business might be started over the Dhanteras holiday, as can the purchase of a house, car, or jewelry.
